FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW IS IYENGAR YOGA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TYPES OF YOGA?
Iyengar yoga is a traditional form of yoga, with a tracible lineage, that encompasses the ancient Indian philosophy. As explained on the Iyengar Yoga page, the method was developed to enable every body to experience the benefits of yoga – namely an improvement in one’s posture, flexibility and stamina, as well as a more focused and stable mind. To achieve this, props are used.
I’VE NEVER DONE YOGA BEFORE. IS IT OKAY OF I JOIN ANY OF TINA’S CLASSES?
Yes. Once you’ve registered with the Momoyoga app and provided any additional information about yourself, including your previous experience (or none) of yoga, Tina will be able to adapt her class sequence to accommodate your personal requirements in the class and over time, so that your practice – like everyone’s – is unique to you.
I HAVE A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION/OLD INJURY. WILL I BE OKAY TO DO YOGA?
Iyengar yoga can be a strenuous exercise, involving putting the body under some strain and tension, as well as release. Therefore, just as with any other form of exercise, if you have any serious doubts, you should consult your doctor before joining a class. Make sure you fill in the comments section of the registration form, outlining any medical history that you feel is relevant. Tina will let you know if your condition is unsuitable for her classes. Otherwise, she will adapt the poses to help you to work with and around your condition.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Wear comfortable clothing that will allow your body to stretch freely. Reasonably close-fitting garments allow your teacher to see the body more easily. But if you are more comfortable in looser clothing, then please be comfortable!
DO I NEED TO BRING A MAT?
Studio Harmony is a fully equipped yoga studio, so there’s no need to bring anything. But if you have a mat that you prefer to use, then do bring it.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?
You’re advised not to practice yoga after eating. Leave 2 hours after a main meal, 1 hour after a light snack.
Iyengar yoga has a particular focus on the precision of alignment, to bring balance to the mind and body. Therefore, verbal and sometimes physical corrections are used. Tina will always ask before touching you, but if you would rather not be corrected physically, please put this in the additional information on the registration form.
Important: If you are joining Zoom classes, please refer to the Welcome email received at registration and the Online Class Information delivered with your link in order to stay safe and get the most out of Online Classes.
The most important thing is that you feel content and at ease, so that you are able to practice your yoga.
